Our Transition Year Programme is an optional year that bridges the gap between the more dependent learning style of Junior Certificate and the Leaving Certificate. It is a hugely popular option in our school, with places offered subject to availability.
It encourages personal and social development and recognises the need for students to grow in independence. Transition Year fosters academic achievement as students prepare for a Leaving Certificate programme, further study and adult and working life. It encourages the development of a wide range of transferable critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.
All basic curricular subjects are covered as well as Film & Drama, current affairs and Young Social Innovators. Other activities can include First Aid, Deportment and Modelling, HACCP programme and PE Leadership Modules. Latest modules of offer include `7 Habits for Highly Effective Teenagers` and Personal Finance. All students who have completed each module will get a certificate.
Students get the opportunity to do work experience within the school year to aid career option decisions and hence aid subject choice for 5th year.
Trips can include travelling to Dáil Éireann, Kilmainhaim Jail, Dunmore Caves and a week in Carlingford Outdoor Pursuits facility and other locations.
Other activities include the opportunity to do business projects, participate in the Gaisce programme, get involved with Green Schools and art & crafts classes take place throughout the year.
421 Peer Drug Awareness Initiative is an important part of the transition year programme. 4th years students research, plan , develop and deliver a drug-awareness module for the first years who readily accept the knowledge, experience and advice of their peers. This done in conjunction with the HSE and Ossory Youth services. It has the added benefit of fostering leadership in transition year students.
Computers and IT play a large role in transition year with students preparing to take the IC3 2005 Internet and Computing Core Certification, a globally recognised qualification. Students who wish to reach a higher and more specialised certification are given this option.
Typing classes are held each week. Basic keyboarding skills and examination preparation to intermediate standard is taught throughout the year for their exam in early May. Students who wish to reach a higher level of excellence are given this option.
Many students volunteer their time to helping out with the Fr. McGrath Centre and St Vincent de Paul.
